Observing the structure of a palm tree leaf I found close to the location, I was surprised by how such a thin leaf could support large surfaces.
In order to optimize the cardboard materials, the number of molds as well as future assembly accessories, we developed a component-based self- supporting structure for the TEDx Amazon scenography. In nature, leaves often use bending to maintain structure stability. Mirroring this pattern in our component based-drawings, we practically came to one classical origami solution that worked perfectly for our purpose.
A combination of only two components in more complex elements (making a parameter of a system of triangular geometry) and the successive instrumentalization of these in a system (structural proliferation of elements) gave way to the creation of our “instrument.” From then on, we could “play” the shapes that adapt to every project’s needs, once the necessary data are provided.
The result of this specific design process enabled the production of a self-supporting structure that stood at an exceptional height of 7 meters with just 7mm-thick recycled Kraft cardboard using only two modular components.
The same cardboard components were used in different compositions for all scenographic needs, such as backstage, soft-wall divisions, sunshades, blackouts and finishes.
