The Brazilian Pavilion at Expo Milan 2015 is the result of synergy among professionals from different areas. Together we created a proposal seeking to transcend the boundaries between architecture, expography and contents in order to transmit a contemporary image of the country through the thematic lens of “Brazil: feeding the world with solutions.”
Studio Arthur Casas and Atelier Marko Brajovic, in collaboration with the curators Rony Rodrigues and Eduardo Biz, and the Italian firm Mosae, worked throughout 2014 and 2015 to transform the winning proposal into reality.
Brazil’s diversity, whether cultural, ethnic, climatic or productive, was the starting point for considering the country we want. This concept, in turn, became the core idea of the pavilion: an organized network that is flexible, fluid and decentralized.
The pavilion space was divided into two main components: a gallery which had an open design in the form of an open-air tunnel which served as a counterpoint to a second volume, which was more closed and acted as space for holding planned events.
The tunnel featured the network concept in the form of a physical, interactive and symbolic net that invited visitors to interact with it by walking on it and thereby influence the space through sound and light, which changed according to the flow of people in, out and through the gallery.
The idea of making a net that integrates, connects and distributes be the theme of the Brazil Pavilion is a manifestation of our core vision for design. It also represents the way we think about space and architecture.
Brazilian agricultural production was featured in the space under the net. Visitors could interact with different examples of Brazilian crops at five stations whose space was marked by a direct connection to the net above through tension cables that created an elipse in the net’s surface just above the station. The design for these "plantations" was inspired by the path of the Amazon River. This helped to generate an optimal flow for visitors around a landscape created by a series of wood-framed flower beds.
When considering the exhibition design project for the Expo pavilion, we thought about the diversity of people and visiting times as well as the different experiential possibilities available to the visitor.
By proposing free access to different possible routes through the pavilion, we sought to provide a democratic experience that enabled different perspectives: a playful and immersive experience in the entrance gallery – and a more steady approach to the proposed themes in the closed space.
The building’s interior featured restaurants, cafes, an auditorium, offices, shops and a second exhibition area where other topics were made available for reflection: technology, art and culture were presented in videos, diagrams and works of art.
An installation by the artist Laerte Ramos titled Casa Mata complemented the space, poetically addressing the country's urbanity through dwellings that dialogue with little João de Barro bird houses and modern Brazilian architecture.
Bodies, smells, colors, texts, sounds, images and technology were the media through which visitors could use all their senses to experience our country.
