Atelier Marko Brajovic, at the invitation of the Almerinda Malaquias Foundation, designed the architectural project for the Rio Negro Community Schools, which is part of the Riverside Education Project to strengthen basic education in the communities of Novo Airão, Amazonas. The northern region contains the worst education indicators in the country and, in addition to the deficit in the number of schools and infrastructure, access to the few existing ones is difficult given the distances between communities.
Looking at the education of indigenous, riverine people and quilombolas of the forest, the project has the initiative to build efficient, local, sustainable and collective schools, for this it is more than a premise, a real need for a constructive intelligence that optimizes the construction, logistics and maintenance of these buildings.
The project's three design premises are the basic conditions for its feasibility and, at the same time, it is an impact factor for communities and the forest:
1. Rescue of the typology of regional architecture in the language and bioclimatic solution. Raised base, wooden structure and closures, openings protected by mosquito nets allowing security, lighting and natural cross ventilation.
2. Modular flexibility, adapting to different programs, community size, topographic, micro-urban, functional and emergency use. Easy maintenance of buildings thanks to local materials and technologies;
3. Constructive intelligence in the optimization of logistics, construction and maintenance. The architecture of schools is organized in modules and adapts to the size of the community thanks to the easy coupling of new modules. Construction has its constructive method similar to those of traditional local constructions and are therefore easily executed by local labor.
The Riverside Education Project to strengthen basic education in the communities of Novo Airão, is an initiative of the Almerinda Malaquias Foundation in partnership with the Katerre expedition and the Novo Airão City Hall. In addition to the architectural project of schools, the project is intended to enable teachers through courses, training and support houses in more than 50 local communities. It is estimated that the total beneficiary public will be 6,460 people. This audience consists of children, adolescents, youth and adults living in these communities, people who live traditionally in the Amazon rainforest, obtaining the livelihood of it.
